Chimney Sweeping

It is recommended that you have your chimney cleaned and inspected at least once a year. The National Chimney Institute of America recommends that chimneys be cleaned if they have a layer of creosote 1/8 inch thick or more. It is best to have all sweeps and inspections done in the spring or summer months so that any problems can be resolved before winter.

Fire Safe respects your home and property. We take all the steps necessary to ensure that your home stay clean while providing a thorough sweep and inspection.

  • First we look to see if the fireplace needs to be cleaned.
  • We tape off the front of your fireplace on all sides, to prevent soot from coming into the house.
  • We then go on the roof to run our brushes down the flue from the top down. Note that on tile and other roofs with breakable materials we use tile walkers, which disperse weight over a large area, preventing broken tiles.
  • Then we remove the tape from the fireplace and carefully shovel loose soot and ash.
  • From the time we remove the paper we use a vacuum to remove all remaining soot and get between all the cracks in the fireplace.
  • During the entire process we do a thorough inspection.

In order to better prepare for a sweep, please consider the following:

  • A 6x9 foot space in front of the fireplace is needed to set down a tarp and tape off the front of the fireplace.
  • No fires at least 24 hours before the scheduled sweep or we don't clean the firebox.
  • Clearing out ash and burnt logs will speed up the sweeping process.

The cost is $150.00 and includes an inspection. See Fireplace Inspections for details.
